but.ather ‘What does God want me to be?” Each of us is called to be someone and to do things it is part of human existence and discovering these things is a lifelong process of growth and change. Often, too, we have to hesitate in our choice between two incompatible deeds or courses of action. Your vocation is not the same as your career or profession. At the same time, a semi-Quietism in France led people to believe that a man ought to defer his action until he was conscious of a special Divine impulse, a sort of Divine message revealing to him what he ought to do. A reaction set in against this abuse, and young men were expected, instead of following the choice of their parents, a choice often dictated by purely human considerations, to wait for a special call from God before entering the seminary or the cloister . If this were the case, God, who is infinitely good, would make His will known to every man in a way which could not be misunderstood. It is their duty also to discover the germ of a vocation, and develop it by forming the character and encouraging the generosity of the will. Individual vocations vary between being single, married, consecrated, religious or a priest.
She said her brother was murdered in a shooting. When the judge asked whether she could keep an open mind in this case, particularly on the possibility that a gun might not be for criminal use, she said, “Maybe I do have problems with that,” and was excused. And, way in the back, a large black guy in a white T-shirt had come rigorously prepared; he set up a T.V. dinner-type tray in front of his seat for his breakfast and his copy of the Torah. I was also told about one man who takes copious notes each week. He sends them out to the Torah studys email list, complete with citations and links. To bring things to a close, Marder had us rise and turn to the inside back cover of our books, where a copy of Kaddish DRabbanan (a version of Kaddish said at the end of a period of study) was affixed. We read this aloud in English, which struck me as a perfect distillation of contemporary mainstream Reform Judaism. (Kaddish DRabbanan entered the Reform repertoire about 10 years ago with the publication of the Reform siddur Mishkan Tfilah; Marder was on the prayerbooks extended editorial committee.) The people who come to this Torah study are devotees. Many come every week. They know each other.
